OWURA; GUITARIST AND COMPOSER COMPARABLE TO THE BEST...

OWURA MUSIC PLAYER

Owura was born on 27 June 1978 in Akyim-Tafo in the Eastern Region of Ghana. He is the second born and only son of three children.

His father is a cocoa research officer and his mother a trader of foodstuffs. He attended a Roman Catholic school in Kukurantumi. His urge to play music began at the age of 10 years, after seeing a military band perform at his uncle’s funeral.

His decision to play the guitar came from his observations that were very few guitarists playing for his church band.He then started with his make-shift guitar of firewood and a metal wire which he obtained from a curtain in his home.

ADVERTISEMENTS

Owura would go to church early on Sunday just to get the opportunity to hold a real guitar while helping the senior members set up the instruments. Since the few church guitarists were mainly base guitarists and there were no lead guitar teachers, he started experimenting on his own and mastered songs that he already knew through constant practice.

He also begged the church guitarist to allow him to play once in a while during service but, of course, this was not done often. Once, while in school, he had the opportunity to play for a band at a funeral.

Amazingly, he played so excellently that he was asked to stand in for the lead guitarist at another function after this...

He was found to be very proficient at the songs he already knew, and was seen to improvise well with the songs he was not so familiar with. This eventually earned him a place in the band as a full member. Because of Owura’s unique style and approach to music, he was chosen out of many musicians, some of whom were his childhood friends, at an audition for the in-house band at the National Theatre.

He also performed with the same group of musicians backing the legendary Hugh Masekela. He later joined the Magic System band from La Cote d’Ivoire.
